Giant Shark Seen in Maui County Waters

HexanchusA video of a giant shark haunting the ocean depths off Molokai has been posted on YouTube by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL). The shark, estimated to be 18 feet long, is a six gilled Hexanchus.

The shark was filmed from the deep sea submersible Pisces V anchored in more than 3000 feet of water about two miles off Molokai. Researchers were using chunks of ahi to attract bottom scavengers for study when the shark appeared. Crew members said the shark bumped the sub several times and moved it about a meter from it’s original location.

When you watch the video be sure to turn up the audio so you can hear the excited voices of the crew. Imagine, more than half a mile deep and a shark almost as long as the sub is knocking at the door. I think that qualifies as exciting. Use the red laser dots in the video to get an idea of the size of the shark, they’re six inches apart. Enjoy!
