Winter Storm Brings Snow to Maui
A late January storm brought snow to the top Haleakala, Maui’s highest mountain. The 10,000 foot tall mountain was blanketed with a light layer of snow down to about 7,000 feet. Haleakala National Park officials closed the summit to visitors as a precaution.
Snow is not that unusual on Maui. Every few years the top of Haleakala gets a dusting. When an unusually cold and wet weather front with high winds moves across the island snow can result at higher elevations. Maui’s last snowfall was in January of 2006.
When the summit reopened many island residents and visitors made the trek to the top to enjoy the unusual conditions. Maui Online Guide reader Rosemary was kind enough to forward a few photographs of the unusual event. Thanks Rosemary.
